Kolkata is one of the closest big cities to Varanasi, about 650 to 680 km away, and the journey fits comfortably into a long weekend. A good Varanasi tour package from Kolkata uses that advantage: you can leave on an evening train, wake up in Kashi and spend a full first day in the city. Many Bengali families have made this trip for generations, and the old Bengali Tola neighbourhood in Varanasi is a reminder of how strong that connection is.
This page explains how to travel between the two cities, how to choose a trip length, what a typical plan looks like and what to prepare before you go. If you want to see the full range of routes we run, browse our Varanasi holiday tour packages.
Why Kolkata Travellers Choose Kashi
Distance is the first reason. Few major cities sit this close to Varanasi, so you can reach Kashi in a night by train or in under an hour and a half by air. That makes short trips realistic, and a long weekend is enough for a first visit.
The second reason is tradition. For many Bengali families, a visit to Kashi is a pilgrimage to Lord Vishwanath, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, and a trip taken with parents or grandparents. The third reason is the festival calendar. Dev Deepawali, Maha Shivratri and the winter months draw large crowds, and travellers from Kolkata often plan around the Puja holidays to combine a rest from the city with a spiritual trip.
Train or Flight from Kolkata
Both options work well, and the right one depends on how much leave you have.
By train, most services run from Howrah, with a few from Sealdah. The fastest express trains take about 10 to 11 hours, while slower services take up to 14 or 15 hours. An overnight train saves a hotel night and puts you in Varanasi in the morning, which suits a 3 day trip. The Poorva Express is often listed as the fastest option. Check which Varanasi station your train uses: some services arrive at Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, across the river from the city, so allow extra transfer time.
By air, the nonstop flight takes about 1 hour 20 to 25 minutes. It is the better choice for senior travellers, short trips and anyone who prefers not to spend a night on a train. Nonstop service on this route is limited, so book early, especially around Durga Puja, Dev Deepawali and winter holidays.
| Option | Typical time | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Flight | About 1h 20m to 1h 25m | Senior travellers, tight schedules |
| Train | Roughly 10 to 15 hours | Overnight travel, budget trips |
| Road | About 670 km, around 10 hours | Private road trips with stops |

Our Kolkata to Varanasi Tour Packages
We offer three trips. Each can be adjusted for dates, hotel category and group size, and each page has the day-wise plan and current price.
The 3 Days Varanasi tour package from Kolkata is the usual first visit. It covers the evening Ganga Aarti, a sunrise boat ride, Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Sarnath without a rushed pace. It pairs well with an overnight train in and a flight or train out.
The 4 Days Varanasi Ayodhya tour package from Kolkata adds Ram Janmabhoomi and the Saryu Aarti. Varanasi and Ayodhya are a long drive apart, so the plan gives each city its own evening. Our guide to the Varanasi to Ayodhya distance explains the road journey.
The 4N/5D Varanasi tour package from Kolkata suits families and senior travellers. The extra time allows rest between the dawn boat ride and the evening Aarti, and it makes temple visits easier outside peak hours.
If you are unsure, choose three days. It is the shortest plan that does not feel rushed.
A Sample 3 Day Plan from Kolkata
This is a typical flow for a trip that starts with an overnight train. Your exact plan depends on your arrival time and the trip page you choose.
Day 1: arrival and the evening Aarti
Arrive in the morning, check in and rest. Spend the afternoon in the old city lanes around Vishwanath Gali and Godaulia. Reach Dashashwamedh Ghat 30 to 45 minutes before the evening Ganga Aarti to get a good spot on the steps, or watch it from a boat. If your train arrives in the evening, the Aarti moves to day two.
Day 2: sunrise boat, temple and Sarnath
Start with a sunrise boat ride at around 5:00 to 5:30 am, when pilgrims take their dawn dip and priests begin their rituals. After breakfast, visit Kashi Vishwanath Temple. In the afternoon, spend half a day at Sarnath, where the Dhamek Stupa and the museum are the main stops. See our Sarnath timings guide before you go, because the museum closes on Fridays.
Day 3: ghats, shopping and departure
Take a slow morning walk along the ghats. Visit Manikarnika Ghat respectfully with a guide, because photography is discouraged. Leave time for Banarasi silk or brassware shopping before your train or flight home. For a longer breakdown, read the Varanasi itinerary for 3 days.
Where to Stay in Varanasi
Your hotel area affects how easy the trip feels. The old city and ghat side puts you within walking distance of the temple and the Aarti, but the lanes are narrow, and vehicles cannot reach many hotels, so heavy luggage and elderly travellers find it harder. The Cantonment area near the railway station has wider roads and easier pickup, which suits families. The Assi and Lanka side is quieter and greener, close to Banaras Hindu University.
Tell us who is travelling and how much walking suits them, and we will recommend the right area for your group.
Food for Bengali Travellers
Varanasi is a largely vegetarian city, especially around the temples, and many hotels near the ghats serve only vegetarian meals. Non-vegetarian food is available in some parts of the city, so tell us your preferences when you enquire and we will plan meals accordingly.
Local specialities are worth trying. Start the morning with kachori sabzi and a Banarasi lassi in a kulhad. In winter, look for malaiyo, a saffron milk foam sold only in the colder months. Tamatar chaat near Godaulia is another local favourite. Our guide to the best places to eat in Varanasi lists where to go.
Sarnath and the Wider Circuit
Sarnath is about 10 km from the city centre and takes half a day. It is one of the most important Buddhist sites, because the Buddha gave his first sermon there. The Dhamek Stupa, the Ashoka Pillar remains and the museum are the highlights.
If you have more time, Varanasi pairs naturally with nearby pilgrimage cities. Ayodhya is the most popular add-on, and Prayagraj, with its Triveni Sangam, is another. Our Varanasi, Ayodhya and Prayagraj itinerary shows how the three fit together. Share your dates and we will plan the routing.
What a Good Package Handles
Varanasi works best with structure. The Ganga Aarti follows a fixed schedule that moves with sunset. Temple entry involves security checks and queues. The old city lanes are too narrow for vehicles, so the last stretch is on foot. A package puts these in the right order and removes the guesswork.
Our trips are planned around a hotel stay, a private vehicle with a driver, and local guidance at the main stops. Check each trip page for exact inclusions and ask whether train or flight tickets are part of the price.
Plan to budget separately for tickets, boat rides, special darshan and meals outside the itinerary. Our Varanasi trip cost guide explains typical costs on the ground, and the boat ride price guide covers the boat. The Ganga Aarti timing guide helps you plan arrival day.
When to Go
October to March is the most comfortable window, with temperatures mostly between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius. Nights between December and January are colder than in Kolkata, so carry warm layers. Dense fog in those months can delay trains and flights, so avoid tight return connections.
Dev Deepawali falls on Tuesday, 24 November 2026, when the ghats are lit with thousands of diyas. It is spectacular and crowded, and trains and hotels fill weeks ahead. If you are travelling around Durga Puja or the winter holidays, book tickets as early as possible.
Summer from April to June often crosses 40 degrees, so keep sightseeing to dawn and evening. The monsoon can pause boat rides when the river runs high. See the best time to visit Varanasi for a month by month breakdown.
Preparing for Your Trip
Carry a valid photo ID, since it is needed at Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, and wear shoes you can slip off easily. Keep some cash for small shops and boatmen, because many old city stalls do not take cards.
Pack a shawl or light jacket even in October or March, because mornings by the river are cool. If you plan to enter the temple, leave bags and phones where the rules require, and check the latest process in our Kashi Vishwanath ticket price guide. Hire only licensed local guides, not people who approach you near a temple or ghat.
