Sarnath is not one single temple, it is a whole complex, the Dhamek Stupa, the Mulagandha Kuti Vihar, the Archaeological Museum, a handful of international Buddhist temples, and the evening light and sound show. Each one runs on its own schedule, and that is exactly where most first time visitors get tripped up, either showing up when the museum is shut for the day or missing the light show because they left too early. This guide puts every timing in one place, along with entry fees, the best hours to visit, and how to fit it all into a single trip from Varanasi.

Sarnath Temple Complex Timings
Dhamek Stupa and Archaeological Site (Deer Park)
- Open: 6:00 AM
- Closed: 6:00 PM
- Open all days of the week, including Friday
- Entry Fee: Around ₹20 to ₹25 for Indian, SAARC and BIMSTEC visitors, and around ₹250 to ₹300 for foreign visitors, depending on cash or online payment
This is the main archaeological area where the stupa, the ruins of ancient monasteries and the original spot of Buddha's first sermon are all located.
Sarnath Archaeological Museum
- Open: 9:00 AM
- Closed: 5:00 PM
- Weekly Off: Friday
- Entry: A separate ticket applies
Since the museum is closed on Fridays, if your Varanasi trip happens to land on a Friday, plan to spend more time at the stupa grounds and the temples instead, and save any museum visit for a different day.
Mulagandha Kuti Vihar
- Open: 6:00 AM
- Closed: 7:00 PM
This is the main modern Buddhist temple in Sarnath, built by the Mahabodhi Society in 1931, and known for its detailed frescoes depicting the life of Buddha. It sits close to the Bodhi tree sapling brought from Bodh Gaya, so most visitors combine both in the same stop.
Sarnath Light and Sound Show
- Show Time: Around 6:30 PM daily, timing shifts a little by season, closer to 6:15 PM in winter and around 6:45 PM in summer since it depends on sunset
- Duration: About 30 minutes
- Entry Fee: Around ₹200 for Indian visitors and ₹250 for foreign visitors
- Location: Projected on the Dhamek Stupa itself, narrated in the voice of Amitabh Bachchan
If you plan to catch this show, arrive at least an hour early, seating fills up and the ticket counter line can move slowly closer to showtime.
Other Buddhist Temples in Sarnath
Sarnath has several international monasteries, each with its own hours, most keep loose all day timings but a few close for a few hours in the afternoon.
- Thai Temple: Around 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM
- Tibetan Temple: Around 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with morning chanting between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM
- Japanese Temple: Roughly 4:30 AM to 11:00 AM and 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM, with evening prayers around 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM
- Sri Lankan Temple: Generally open through daylight hours
Entry to all of these is free. If quiet monastery visits interest you more than the museum or the stupa grounds, budget an extra hour or two to walk through a few of these.
Best Time to Visit Sarnath
Best time of day: Early morning, between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM, when the light is soft, the air is cool and the crowd is thin. Late afternoon, roughly 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, is the second best window and sets you up perfectly for the evening light and sound show.
Time to avoid: Late morning to early afternoon, around 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, is when most tour groups and day trippers arrive, so this stretch gets the busiest.
Best time of year: October to March. Summer months, April to June, get very hot in the open stupa grounds, so if you are visiting in that season, stick strictly to the early morning or late evening slots.
How Much Time You Need
A relaxed visit covering the Dhamek Stupa, the ruins, the museum and Mulagandha Kuti Vihar usually takes about three to four hours. If you also want to catch the evening light and sound show, plan for a half day trip from Varanasi rather than squeezing it into a single morning.
How to Reach Sarnath from Varanasi
Sarnath is roughly 10 km from central Varanasi, about a 25 to 40 minute drive depending on traffic.
- By cab or auto: The most common way, a round trip cab usually costs a fixed fare and can wait while you explore
- By local bus: Regular buses run between Varanasi and Sarnath, the cheapest option if you are not in a hurry
- By train: Sarnath has its own small railway station, though very few trains actually stop there, so road transport is far more practical
If your Sarnath trip is a half day outing, many visitors head back into the city for the evening and catch the Ganga Aarti on the same day. Our Ganga Aarti timing guide will help you time that part so both fit comfortably into one day.
A Simple Way to Plan Your Sarnath Day
Start early, reach the Dhamek Stupa grounds right when it opens at 6:00 AM, and walk through the ruins while the light is still soft. Move to Mulagandha Kuti Vihar next, since it is close by, then head to the museum once it opens at 9:00 AM, unless it happens to be a Friday. If you have the time, spend the late afternoon at one of the international temples, and end the day with the light and sound show around sunset.
If your trip also includes the city's temples, our Varanasi temple timings guide covers Kashi Vishwanath, Kaal Bhairav and the others, so you can plan the temple side of your trip and the Sarnath side without any overlap in timing.
Quick Tips
- Carry water and a hat, the stupa grounds are open and shaded spots are limited.
- Footwear needs to come off before entering Mulagandha Kuti Vihar and most of the other temples.
- Keep some cash handy, not every ticket counter accepts digital payment reliably.
- If you want the light and sound show, confirm the exact start time locally, since it shifts slightly with sunset through the year.
- Combine your visit with a Varanasi to Sarnath cab that waits for you, it saves the hassle of negotiating an auto twice in one day.
