Varanasi, Prayagraj and Ayodhya are three of the most loved pilgrimage cities in Uttar Pradesh. Many families want to see all three in one trip. The big question is simple: how many days do you really need?

Short answer: 4 days is the smallest plan that feels comfortable. 5 days is better if you want to stay relaxed. In this guide you will get the distances, the best route order, a day-by-day plan and tips to avoid the common mistakes.

How Many Days Do You Need for Varanasi, Prayagraj and Ayodhya?

Here is a simple way to choose.

Days How it feels Best for
3 days Very rushed, one city per day People with very little time
4 days Comfortable, all three cities covered First-time pilgrims
5 days Relaxed, extra time in Varanasi and Ayodhya Families and senior citizens
6 to 7 days Slow pace, room for extra places Those who also want Chitrakoot or Lucknow

Most of your time goes into travel between the cities. Varanasi needs the most time because it has the temples, the ghats, the Ganga Aarti and Sarnath. Prayagraj can be done in half a day to one day. Ayodhya needs at least one full day.

Distance and Travel Time Between the Three Cities

You will spend a lot of your trip on the road, so it helps to know the numbers.

Route Distance (approx.) Time by road
Varanasi to Prayagraj 120 to 125 km 3 to 3.5 hours
Prayagraj to Ayodhya 165 km 3.5 to 4.5 hours
Varanasi to Ayodhya (direct) 200 to 220 km 4 to 5 hours

Times change with traffic, festivals and road work. For more detail on the direct route, read our guide on the Varanasi to Ayodhya distance.

Best Route Order: Varanasi, Then Prayagraj, Then Ayodhya

Start in Varanasi, move to Prayagraj, and end in Ayodhya. The three cities sit like a triangle on the map. This order gives you a smooth line with no backtracking.

If you go Varanasi to Ayodhya first and then return to Prayagraj, you add extra driving for no reason. Ending in Ayodhya is also handy because it has its own railway station and an airport, and Lucknow is another option for your trip home.

Most travelers arrive in Varanasi. If you need help with your first day, see our guides on how to reach Varanasi and Varanasi airport taxi fares.

Sample 4-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Varanasi

Check in, rest for a while and start with Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Keep the evening free for the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat. Reach the ghat early to get a good place. Check the Ganga Aarti timings before you go, as they change with the season.

Day 2: Varanasi Sightseeing, Then Drive to Prayagraj

Wake up early for a sunrise boat ride on the Ganga. See our boat ride price and booking guide so you know the rates in advance. Then visit Kaal Bhairav Temple and Sarnath. Check the Kaal Bhairav timings and the Sarnath timings to plan the order.

After lunch, drive to Prayagraj. It takes about 3 hours. Check in and rest.

Day 3: Prayagraj Sangam, Then Drive to Ayodhya

Go to Triveni Sangam in the morning, where the Ganga and Yamuna meet. Many pilgrims take a boat to the Sangam point and take a holy dip. Then visit Bade Hanuman Temple. Anand Bhavan is a good stop if you have spare time.

After that, drive to Ayodhya. It takes about 3.5 to 4.5 hours, so leave by late morning. Reach in the afternoon, check in and attend the Saryu Aarti in the evening.

Day 4: Ayodhya Darshan and Departure

Start early for Ram Janmabhoomi darshan, as mornings have shorter queues. Entry rules and timings can change, so check the latest details before you travel. After that, visit Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan and Dashrath Mahal. Then leave for your train or flight.

This is the flow behind our 4 Days Varanasi Prayagraj Ayodhya Tour Package, which starts from ₹7,499.

If You Have 5 Days

The fifth day gives you breathing space. Most people add it in Varanasi so they can see the Kashi Vishwanath Temple without hurrying, walk the old lanes and shop. You can also use it to slow down the drive to Ayodhya.

This plan works well for families with children and for senior citizens, since there are fewer long travel days back to back. See our 5 Days Varanasi Prayagraj Ayodhya Tour Package, which starts from ₹8,499.

If You Have 6 or 7 Days

With more time, you can add nearby places without stress:

Can You Do It in 3 Days?

Yes, but it is tight. You would spend one day in each city and most of it in the car. You will see the main places, but you will not have time to sit by the ghats or enjoy the evening aartis calmly.

If you only have 3 days, it is better to pick two cities. For example, spend the time on Varanasi alone with our 3 Days Varanasi Tour Package, or on Ayodhya with our 2 Days Ayodhya Tour Package.

Best Time for This Trip

October to March is the best time. The weather is cool, and long drives and temple queues are easier. Summer from April to June is very hot, and the monsoon months can be humid.

Festival days and big fairs bring heavy crowds and higher hotel prices in all three cities. If you want to travel in a festival season, book early. Read our guide on the best time to visit Varanasi for month-wise advice.

How Much Does the Trip Cost?

Your cost depends on hotel type, the car, meals and how many people share the ride. A package usually bundles hotels, a private cab and transfers, so it is easier to plan. For a full cost breakdown, see our Varanasi trip cost budget guide.

Tips for a Smooth Trip

  • Start early. Temples are calmer in the morning.
  • Do not plan too much on travel days. A 4-hour drive plus sightseeing is tiring.
  • Book hotels near the main sites. This saves time and energy, especially for elders.
  • Dress modestly. All three cities are religious places.
  • Carry some cash. Small shops and vendors may not take digital payments.
  • Keep a buffer. Traffic near Ayodhya has grown with more visitors.
  • Confirm temple rules before you go. Timings and entry steps can change.

Why Book This Trip With a Local Operator?

The hardest part of this trip is not the sightseeing. It is the timing between cities, cab drivers who know the roads, hotel bookings near the temples and good guides. A local team handles these for you, so you can focus on darshan.

You can see all our options on the Varanasi Packages page, or read more about choosing the right tour operator.

Conclusion

Four days is a good base for Varanasi, Prayagraj and Ayodhya, and five days makes the trip more relaxed. Go in the order Varanasi, Prayagraj, Ayodhya, start your days early, and do not stack too much on the long drive days.
