Mumbai and Varanasi are about 1,250 km apart, and a nonstop flight covers that in a little over two hours. Most of the planning for a Varanasi tour package from Mumbai is not about the flight. It is about understanding a city that works very differently from the one you live in, so you can choose the right number of days.
This page explains Varanasi in plain terms, shows how our three Mumbai trips differ, and covers the practical details that affect your budget and comfort. To see every route we run, browse our Varanasi packages.

Varanasi in Five Minutes
Varanasi is also called Kashi or Banaras, and it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. For Hindus it is the city of Lord Shiva, and a visit to Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, is the centre of any pilgrimage here. The river Ganga runs along the western edge, and around 84 ghats, which are stone stairways, line its bank.
Life in the old city moves around those ghats. Pilgrims bathe at dawn, priests perform rituals through the morning, and the evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat draws crowds every day. Read our guide to the ghats in Varanasi to learn which ones matter most.
Reading the map
It helps to think of Varanasi in three zones. The old city, around Godaulia, Vishwanath Gali and Dashashwamedh, holds the temple and the busiest ghats, and its lanes are too narrow for cars. The southern zone around Assi Ghat, Lanka and Banaras Hindu University is quieter and greener. Sarnath sits about 10 km north of the centre and is a separate Buddhist site. Knowing this makes it clear why a plan that moves sensibly between zones saves hours.
Our Varanasi Tour Packages from Mumbai
We offer three trips. Each can be adjusted for dates, hotel category and group size, and each trip page has the day-wise plan and current price.
The 3 Days Varanasi tour package from Mumbai is the usual first visit. It fits the Aarti, a sunrise boat ride, the temple and Sarnath into one full day plus two partial days.
The 4 Days Varanasi Ayodhya tour package from Mumbai adds Ram Janmabhoomi and the Saryu Aarti. Because the two cities are a long drive apart, the plan gives each its own evening. Our guide to the Varanasi to Ayodhya distance explains the journey.
The 4N/5D Varanasi tour package from Mumbai is the slow option. An extra day means you can rest after the dawn boat ride and visit the temple outside peak queue hours. It suits families and senior travellers best.
How to Get from Mumbai to Varanasi
By air
A nonstop flight is the practical choice. IndiGo and Air India are the main operators, and Akasa Air and Air India Express also serve Varanasi. Schedules shift by season and weekday, so check the airline site for your date. A nonstop that leaves in the morning lands you in time for lunch and the evening Aarti.
By train
Trains such as the Mahanagari Express run from Mumbai to Varanasi, but the journey takes around 24 to 28 hours. That is hard to justify on a trip of three to five days. It makes sense for pilgrims with a week or more, and an AC sleeper class makes it bearable. Book through IRCTC well in advance.
By road
Driving is long and not recommended for a short trip. The route runs through central India, and the road distance is more than the flight by a wide margin.
How Much a Varanasi Trip from Mumbai Costs
Think of the cost in three parts. The package price covers the land portion: hotel, transfers and sightseeing as listed on the trip page. Your flights are the biggest variable, and fares rise around Dev Deepawali, Maha Shivratri and winter holidays. Small extras such as boat rides, temple entry, special darshan and meals outside the itinerary come last.
Ask for the inclusions in writing before you pay an advance. Our Varanasi trip cost guide shows what a typical trip costs on the ground, and the boat ride price guide covers the boat.
Planning Notes for Mumbai Travellers
Mumbai’s humidity makes Varanasi’s winter a surprise. Nights between December and January can drop to 5 to 10 degrees Celsius, so carry a shawl or jacket. Dense fog in the same months can delay flights, so keep a buffer of three to four hours before your return flight.
Dev Deepawali falls on Tuesday, 24 November 2026, and hotels and flights fill weeks ahead. Summer from April to June crosses 40 degrees, and the monsoon can pause boat rides when the river is high. See the best time to visit Varanasi for a month by month breakdown.
Sarnath is a half-day visit, and it is worth checking opening days first. Our Sarnath timings guide has the details. For the Aarti, see the Ganga Aarti timing guide, because the start time moves with sunset.
