Magh Mela 2027 Prayagraj + Varanasi: Dates, Snan Days and How to Combine Both Cities

Magh Mela 2027 snan dates, the best date to pick, Varanasi to Prayagraj travel and a 3-day or 5-day plan with Ayodhya.

More than 31 lakh devotees bathed at the Sangam on Paush Purnima in 2026, the first snan of that year's Magh Mela, up from about 29 lakh on the same day in 2024. The numbers matter because Magh Mela 2027 Prayagraj will repeat the pattern: a handful of snan dates draw crowds that reshape roads, trains and hotel availability across eastern Uttar Pradesh, including Varanasi, which sits only 125 km away.

This guide is for travellers who want to bathe at the Sangam during the Mela and also see Kashi, without turning the trip into a crowd-management exercise. You will find the confirmed snan dates, an honest view of which dates to pick or avoid, how to get from Varanasi to Prayagraj, and two ready plans (3 days and 5 days) with an Ayodhya extension.

For most families, the most comfortable plan is to base yourselves in Varanasi, bathe at the Sangam on a snan day that is not Mauni Amavasya, and return to Kashi the same evening or after one night in Prayagraj. On Mauni Amavasya itself, the largest bathing day of the Mela, many travellers are better off taking their Ganga snan at the Varanasi ghats instead.

That is our planning view, not a religious ruling. If your family's tradition is to bathe at the Sangam on a particular tithi, the sections below show how to do it with the least friction.

Magh Mela 2027 Dates and Snan Days at a Glance

The Mela runs from 15 January to 6 March 2027 at the Triveni Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati meet, according to the Uttar Pradesh Tourism listing on Incredible India. Kalpvas, the month-long vow lived in tents on the riverbed, runs from Paush Purnima (22 January) to Maghi Purnima (20 February).

Snan Date (2027) Day What to expect
Makar Sankranti 15 January Friday Opening snan of the Mela
Paush Purnima 22 January Friday Kalpvas begins; very large crowd
Mauni Amavasya 6 February Saturday Largest bathing day by a wide margin
Basant Panchami 11 February Thursday Large crowd, mid-Mela
Maghi Purnima 20 February Saturday Kalpvas ends; heavy weekend traffic
Mahashivratri 6 March Saturday Final snan of the Mela

Two details are worth checking before you book anything non-refundable. Some panchang sites list Makar Sankranti on 14 January and a few list Mahashivratri on 8 March; the dates above follow the Mela schedule and Drik Panchang. For Mauni Amavasya, the amavasya tithi begins at 7:06 PM on 5 February and ends at 9:26 PM on 6 February, so local pandits and the Mela administration's notice will confirm the exact snan window.

Which Magh Mela 2027 Snan Date Should You Choose

Crowd size is the real variable, not merit. Tradition holds that bathing during the month of Magh purifies, and the six dates above are simply the most auspicious days. A normal weekday inside the Mela window is far calmer than any of them.

If you want the main snan and can handle crowds

Mauni Amavasya on 6 February is the one most devotees mean when they say "Magh Mela snan". In 2026, the day before Mauni Amavasya alone saw about 1.5 crore people bathe at the Sangam, and the administration was preparing for around 3 crore on the day itself, according to All India Radio.

Safety planning has also tightened since the Maha Kumbh in January 2025, when a crowd crush on Mauni Amavasya killed 30 people. The Uttar Pradesh government banned vehicles in the Mela area and halted pilgrim vehicles heading to Prayagraj, and the Chief Minister urged devotees to bathe at the nearest ghat rather than push toward the Sangam Nose. A Magh Mela is much smaller than a Maha Kumbh, but the same instincts apply: go early, travel light, follow barricading, and keep elders and children out of the densest stretch.

If you want a fuller experience with less pressure

Basant Panchami (11 February) and Maghi Purnima (20 February) are major dates in their own right, yet they fall after the Mauni Amavasya peak and give you time to also see Prayagraj. Maghi Purnima falls on a Saturday in 2027, so expect extra weekend traffic on the Varanasi road.

Our suggestion for first-timers with elders: choose a non-snan weekday, or a snan date other than Mauni Amavasya, and book a night in Prayagraj rather than racing back.

If Mahashivratri is your date

The Mela ends with the snan on 6 March, and Mahashivratri is also a major night at Kashi Vishwanath. A workable plan is to bathe at the Sangam early on the morning of 6 March, travel back to Varanasi by afternoon, and keep the night for Kashi. The Chaturdashi tithi begins at 12:03 PM on 6 March and runs to 1:46 PM on 7 March (Delhi timings), so confirm the puja window locally.

If you want to bathe on Mauni Amavasya without going to Prayagraj

Devotees also fill the ghats of Varanasi, Mirzapur, Ayodhya and Kanpur on Mauni Amavasya, per the same AIR report. A sunrise Ganga snan at Dashashwamedh or Assi Ghat, followed by darshan at Kashi Vishwanath, is a legitimate way to observe the day if your family is comfortable with a Ganga snan at Kashi.

How to Go From Varanasi to Prayagraj

The two cities are about 125 km apart by road, and the route is well served. These are normal-day figures; snan days are a different story.

Mode Normal-day time Notes
Car or taxi About 2 hours Road distance is roughly 125 km
Train 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes on typical services Vande Bharat is the fastest option, at about 1 hour 25 minutes
UPSRTC bus Longer than the train Buses between Varanasi and Prayagraj Civil Lines run roughly every 15 minutes

On the biggest snan dates, assume none of those timings hold. In 2026 the administration banned four-wheelers from entering the Mela area from 13 January and set up 42 parking sites, so most visitors parked and walked the final stretch. In 2025, police were specifically told to keep the Varanasi to Prayagraj highway moving, which tells you how loaded it gets.

Our planning buffer for a Sangam day trip on any major snan date is to leave Varanasi well before dawn, carry only what you need, and avoid scheduling anything tight after the bath. If a family member is unwell or elderly, a night in Prayagraj is a kindness, not a luxury.

Train booking dates

Indian Railways opens reserved tickets 60 days before the travel date, at 8 AM. Here is when each window opens if you plan to travel on the snan day itself:

Travel date IRCTC booking opens
15 January 16 November
22 January 23 November
6 February 8 December
11 February 13 December
20 February 22 December
6 March 5 January

Confirmed seats on snan dates sell fast, and the 8 AM opening window has been prone to errors in the festive season, so log in and check your account beforehand. Special trains were announced for the 2026 Mela, and the same is likely for 2027, though schedules are usually published closer to the date.

Day Trip From Varanasi or Stay in Prayagraj

Both choices work. The right one depends on the date, your group and how much walking you can manage.

When the day trip wins

A day trip makes sense on lower-crowd dates, for groups that want to keep their Varanasi hotel, and for travellers who prefer the comforts of a familiar room. You bathe at the Sangam, visit a temple or two, and sleep in Kashi.

When staying in Prayagraj wins

Staying makes more sense on big snan dates, with elders or small children, or if you want a pre-dawn bath without a 3 AM drive. It also reduces your exposure to the return-road jam when lakhs of people leave at the same time.

The catch is availability. Rooms in Prayagraj and the Mela tent city fill quickly, and the cost of a last-minute booking near the Sangam climbs on peak dates. If you want to stay overnight, the best moment to look is now, not in January.

A 3-Day Plan: Varanasi With a Sangam Snan

This works with a Varanasi-based stay and a day trip, and it fits most snan dates other than Mauni Amavasya.

Day 1: Arrive in Varanasi. Check in, rest, and walk to Dashashwamedh Ghat for the evening Ganga Aarti. Sleep early.

Day 2: Sangam snan. Leave before dawn for Prayagraj, bathe at the Sangam, and visit a temple such as Bade Hanuman Ji if crowd management allows. Return to Varanasi by evening, or stay the night in Prayagraj on a big date.

Day 3: Kashi darshan. Sunrise boat ride, Kashi Vishwanath darshan (carry a valid photo ID), and Sarnath if time permits. Depart in the afternoon.

If you would rather skip the early start, add a night in Prayagraj and make Day 3 the return to Varanasi. For a longer two-city stay, see our 4 Days Varanasi Prayagraj Tour Package.

A 5-Day Plan: Varanasi, Prayagraj and Ayodhya

Five days gives you room for all three cities without back-to-back long drives. A typical flow looks like this, and the package page lists the confirmed itinerary.

  • Day 1: Arrive in Varanasi, evening Ganga Aarti.
  • Day 2: Sunrise boat ride, Kashi Vishwanath, Sarnath.
  • Day 3: Drive to Prayagraj, Sangam snan, overnight in Prayagraj.
  • Day 4: Prayagraj to Ayodhya, Ram Janmabhoomi darshan, Hanuman Garhi, Saryu aarti.
  • Day 5: Morning in Ayodhya, then departure.

Our 5 Days Varanasi Prayagraj Ayodhya Tour Package starts from ₹8,499 per person for a minimum of six travellers, and covers hotels, meals, transfers, sightseeing and a guide. Rates and availability on snan dates can differ, so mention your date when you enquire.

Adding Ayodhya

Prayagraj to Ayodhya is about 164 km via NH330, a drive of roughly 2.5 to 4 hours depending on traffic and stops. Since both cities draw heavy pilgrim traffic around snan dates, avoid scheduling the Ayodhya leg on the morning after a big snan.

Weather and What to Pack

Prayagraj's January is the coldest part of the Mela. IMD records for 1991 to 2020 show a mean daily maximum of 22.6°C and a minimum of 9.2°C in January, with about 14 foggy days in the month. February warms to 27.6°C and 12.7°C with far less fog, so late-Mela dates are more comfortable.

Early-morning bathing is cold at any date, so pack for it:

  • Wool or thermal layers for the 4 to 7 AM window
  • A quick-dry towel and a change of clothes in a waterproof bag
  • Slip-on footwear you can leave at a stall or tuck into a bag
  • A small cloth bag, since large baggage is awkward in the crowd

For the Varanasi half of the trip, the winter notes in our guide to Varanasi Weather in December carry over well to January and February.

Booking Timeline: Why October to December Matters

Three things get scarce before the Mela: rooms in Prayagraj, confirmed train berths on snan dates, and good drivers for road transfers on the day. Hotels and packages can be arranged now; train windows open from mid-November as shown above. Setting your dates by early November gives you the widest choice and the calmest decisions.
