Sarnath lies about 13 km northeast of Varanasi and marks the deer park where the Buddha is believed to have delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, setting the "Wheel of Dharma" in motion. It is one of the four principal Buddhist pilgrimage sites in India.

The site today is a quiet complex of stupas, monastery ruins, and a modern temple, set apart from the density of Varanasi itself — a contemplative half-day addition to any Kashi itinerary.

• Dhamek Stupa A massive cylindrical stupa marking the spot of the first sermon, the site's most recognizable structure.
• Chaukhandi Stupa An older mound-stupa topped with an octagonal Mughal-era tower, marking where the Buddha met his first disciples.
• Sarnath Archaeological Museum Home to the Lion Capital of Ashoka, adopted as India's national emblem, along with Buddhist sculpture from the site.

Best Time to Visit

October to March, matching Varanasi's cooler season. Buddha Purnima in May draws pilgrims specifically to Sarnath.
